Dennis Lee, from Penang, Malaysia, at age 14 won an ABRSM scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London where he studied piano (under Angus Morrison) and violin. There, apart from Honours diplomas on both instruments, he was awarded many prizes, the Tagore Gold Medal and BMus Hons. and MMus degrees. Following studies in Vienna (with Josef Dichler) and Milan (Ilonka Deckers) he won prizes at the Busoni, Casagrande, Sydney, BBC competitions, and has appeared in London at the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smith Square and Barbican. Orchestras he has performed with include most of the BBC ones, Halle, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker, RAI Milano, Shanghai Symphony, Adelaide and New Zealand symphonies, under conductors including Adrian Boult, Colin Davis, Charles Groves, Andrew Davis, Okko Kamu, Libor Pesek, Gaetano Delogu, etc..
His CD (Hyperion/Helios) of Symanowski piano works has been highly acclaimed, as has his complete cycle of Beethoven sonatas. In the USA he has performed at the Kennedy Center and Merkin Hall (New York), National Gallery and Phillips Collection (Washington DC), San Francisco, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Philadelphia etc.. Festival appearances include Brighton, Cheltenham, Newbury, Arundel, Adelaide, Montreux, Spoleto, Brescia-Bergamo, and Singapore etc.. He is also in constant demand giving masterclasses and judging competitions.
